My Role

UX Design Intern
Product Manager Intern

Timeline

Project duration: October 2022 - November 2022
Internship duration: September 2022 - April 2023

As a UX Designer and Product Manager Intern at SAP, I worked for two products: SAP Analytics Cloud as well as the HANA, Database and Analytics department, specifically working on a team that develops an internal training platform for engineers, developers, designers, product managers and other related roles. As a small team, this allowed me to take ownership of full end-to-end design workflows, such as UX research, ideation, wireframing, prototyping, UX writing and handing the designs off to developers.

At SAP, I had the chance to intern with two teams that provided me with the exposure to both UX design and product management.

This is one of the many projects that I’ve worked on at SAP - feel free to check out more projects here.

PROBLEM

SAP has an internal training platform for employees. However, the existing course registration page presented issues with readability and made it difficult for readers to digest information. The new design aims to reduce information clutter and provide a clearer interface.

Below is the old course registration page, before a redesign was created.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

How should we improve readability and usability for employees using the course registration page?

USER RESEARCH

User feedback revealed that visual clutter and a lack of visual hierarchy led to cognitive overload and readability issues.

We acquired feedback from SAP team members, where we learned that the course registration page had a lot of visual clutter and a lack of visual hierarchy, which caused readability issues. Therefore, it was hard to digest the information presented in the course registration page, especially how there was no structure to how the information was presented.

DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES

  • A hyperlink is now used in replacement of a long URL for the meeting link, allowing text to be kept to a minimum.

  • Large chunks of text have been distinguished into more readable sections by using divider lines and subheadings.

  • The small text that was used for the cancellation policy section raises concerns in terms of readability and accessibility. Instead of using small text, the section is now highlighted with a different background colour to distinguish itself from other content.

  • Bolded headings are used to draw attention to core content, which improves the visual hierarchy and reduces the sense of white space.

Enhancing the visual hierarchy and reducing visual clutter to improve readability and usability.

DESIGN IMPACT

36% improvement in retaining users who registered for courses.

In the first half of 2022, the retention rate of users who registered for a course versus users who actually completed the course was around 70%. By the second half of 2022, we implemented this project and a few other design improvements (which you can read here). The retention rate improved to approximately 95% of users - this represents a 36% improvement in retention compared to the first half of the year, when the design improvements have not been implemented yet.

REFLECTION

Collaborating with developers early in the design process promotes trust and transparency.

Throughout this project, I collaborated very closely with software developers to ensure that the changes I’ve made to the user interface is technically feasible to implement by the developers. For example, some of the interface changes required implementing an API, so I communicated frequently about design iterations with developers to ensure that designs are possible to create. Maintaining a close collaboration with developers helped build trust and transparency throughout the design process, so that the final product was something that we were all 100% satisfied with.
